Release of 1.5.3-RC7-SLIM: Changes, fixes, age verification.

We have a new image and a few words, 1.5.3-RC7-SLIM, available here: https://iso.argentlinux.io/Argent.KDE.BETA.1.5.3-RC7-SLIM.amd64.iso

And MD5 hash here: 40c78c6f6d945ad336005f38af23308e Argent.KDE.BETA.1.5.3-RC7-SLIM.amd64.iso

Bugfixes: Sound

Users have been complaining they don't have a sound on LIVE boot. But previously once you installed the system, you had sound on the installed system.

Right now, with RC7, you will also have sound audio on LIVE medium.

Kernel upgrade: 6.12.85

Finally, after a long time I took my time to upgrade the kernel to a new proper version. We will stay with LTS 6.12.x until it's no longer viable to keep it.

The main reason for using 6.12.85 is to keep a certain compatibility and support for slightly old hardware.

Age verification

Due to recent laws of age verfication for operating systems in California, we have decided to not implement anything regarding age verification at OS level.

What we kindly request right now from Californian internet users is to not download Argent ISO images.

Also, we will implement any patch that disables age verification on the OS level for anything. The patches will be on either package under the form of USE flags, so that whoever wants a different way of handling things, they should have the freedom to do so on their machine, since we're a Gentoo distro.

Code of conduct: Anonymous contributions.

We will implement a Anonymous Contribution Code of Conduct (ACCC).

Meaning: all contributions to Argent Linux must not be tied to any persona. You must keep your personal life, preferences and physical details private and not associate anything with your contribution to Argent.

You will not be allowed to show your identity, and you will not be trusted as a contributor if you diverge the speech towards anything else than tech.

The only identification we need as a contributor is the nickname you choose to contribute with - which also has to not be tied to any of your personal physical and spiritual details; we have no issues in using it permanently, it's at your choice as a contributor. But the responsibility will be to keep your personal life to your personal life.

Any contributor divulging information about self will be blocked from contributing to the project, as it's a Anonymous Contributions Code of Conduct breach. Any topic not related to the technical project will be blocked.

Philosophy and Technical purpose

We're not doing this out of political will, since we don't believe the left versus right war helps anyone. But we do believe in anonymity rights and anonymous communication. And there can only be anonymous if you are truly anonymous. All the internet's most powerful FOSS projects were created by anonymous contributions. We believe this is the only true way to protect the rights of everyone.

Even though we don't hold a political purpose, the influence over our project mostly comes from the principles emphasized by the Pirate Parties, meaning support for anonimity, competition and freedom of information.

And as a technical philosophical foundation, the Free Software Foundation (FSF).

We believe that a system (the totality of the base programs in an operating system, up to graphical ones) should be as much as possible easy to maintain. So we mostly focus not necessarily on simplicity over complexity of features, but as the philosophy of the fewer programming languages in an application, the better. Or the fewer compilers used for recompilation concerning the base level of an operating system, the better.

Since we're a Gentoo distro, some of us compile hundreds of upgrades weekly. And sometimes we have to compile three compilers one after the other, to get few packages to be linked correctly. We believe this is an architectural hell and has no merits other than the ease or preference of developers to develop.

Having said all of this...

We bid our users a warm "Happy hacking!"

And hope we see you on Argent!
